Project Vardhan: Dr. Suhas Hardas’s Mission to Save Lives with CPR Awareness

A Life Can Be Saved in Just Two Minutes — If You Know CPR

Every year, thousands of lives are lost not because medical help wasn’t available — but because help didn’t arrive on time. Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and it can happen anywhere — in gyms, homes, workplaces, or even on the streets. One such tragic incident recently went viral on social media — a young man collapsed while working out at a gym in Hyderabad. People stood around, helpless and panicked. No one knew what to do. He didn’t get CPR. He didn’t survive.

This heartbreaking event made headlines and sparked important conversations online. Fitness entrepreneur Jitendra Chouksey (Founder of Fittr) shared this incident urging people to learn CPR — not tomorrow, not next week — but now.

And that’s exactly what Dr. Suhas Hardas, a leading interventional cardiologist from Pune, has been working on through his awareness initiative — Project Vardhan.

What Is CPR and Why Is It So Important?

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is an emergency life-saving procedure that’s performed when someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped. This often happens during sudden cardiac arrest. Administering CPR helps maintain blood flow to the brain and heart until advanced care becomes available.

CPR can double or triple the chance of survival when performed immediately after cardiac arrest.

Despite being simple to learn, CPR is often unknown or misunderstood by the public. That’s where awareness and training become critical.

How to Perform CPR — Step-by-Step

You don’t need a medical degree to save a life. Anyone can perform CPR by following these basic steps:

1. Check Responsiveness
  • Tap the person and shout, “Are you okay?”
  • If there’s no response, call for help immediately.
2. Call Emergency Services
  • In India, dial 108 or 112 for an ambulance.
  • Get someone to call while you begin CPR.
3. Begin Chest Compressions
  • Place your hands one over the other at the centre of the chest.
  • Push hard and fast at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.
  • Press at least 2 inches deep with each compression.
4. Give Rescue Breaths (If Trained)
  • Tilt the head back, lift the chin, and give 2 rescue breaths.
  • If you’re not trained, focus only on chest compressions (hands-only CPR).
5. Continue Until Help Arrives
  • Don’t stop unless the person starts breathing or medical help takes over.
Project Vardhan – CPR Awareness for Every Citizen

Recognizing the urgent need for CPR knowledge, Dr. Suhas Hardas launched Project Vardhan — a community-driven campaign aimed at educating the general public about life-saving techniques like CPR.

Through workshops and training camps across Pune and Maharashtra, Project Vardhan equips everyday people — students, gym trainers, corporate employees, and homemakers — with the skills and confidence to act during emergencies.

Objectives of Project Vardhan:

  • Create widespread CPR awareness in schools, colleges, and workplaces
  • Organize hands-on CPR training sessions across cities and villages
  • Advocate for CPR training as part of school curriculum and fitness facilities
  • Empower people to take immediate action in emergency situations
“When a heart stops beating, you don’t have time to Google. You need to know what to do — instantly. That’s what Project Vardhan is about.”

Adhikar – Giving Every Child a Healthy Heart

In addition to Project Vardhan, Dr. Hardas also leads Project Adhikar, which provides free cardiac screenings and treatment to underprivileged and differently-abled children across Pune.

This initiative focuses on early diagnosis of heart conditions and ensuring that children from low-income families receive the life-saving care they deserve.

Together, Project Vardhan and Adhikar reflect Dr. Hardas’s larger mission — not just treating heart conditions, but preventing avoidable deaths through education, awareness, and access to care.
